Tirana Clock Tower

Tirana Clock Tower

The clock tower, built by the Ottoman Turks in an Islamic style with a Venetian bell, has a history of repairs and modifications. Ismail Tufina made the first clock in 1822; it was damaged in WWI. It was replaced in 1946 with a German mechanism funded by local families and the municipality, requiring tower extension.

The municipality bought a new German clock in 1928, but it was destroyed in WWII and replaced in 1946 by a Shkodër church clock, then in 1970 by a Chinese clock. Renovations occurred in 1981 and 1999, and a free-access restoration began in 2010 by Tirana's municipality.
