Mother Theresa Square

Mother Theresa Square

Mother Teresa Square (Sheshi Nënë Tereza) is Tirana's second-largest square, named after the Albanian-born Indian nun and Nobel laureate. Designed by Italian architect Gherardo Bosio, it was built between 1939 and 1941 during Italian occupation in a Rationalist style, originally named Victor Emmanuel III Square. Located at the south end of Dëshmorët e Kombit Boulevard, it hosts key institutions like the University of Tirana, Polytechnic University, University of Arts, Archaeological Museum, and Albanological Studies Center.

A fountain was added in 1980, and after Albania's communist fall, it was renamed for Mother Teresa, with a statue on the east side later removed during the 2014 square restoration for Pope Francis's visit. Now a pedestrian zone, it hosts activities and concerts by Tirana's Municipality.
